Metro East Sanitary District  (Horseshoe Lake Control Structure) | Bridges and Structures | Granite City, Illinois

Juneau was contracted to provide civil and structural engineering services for replacing the control structure and bridge widening over Cahokia Channel at the south end of Horseshoe Lake.  The purpose of the control structure is to prevent debris from continuing downstream into areas that are unable to be cleaned. The existing control structure was in disrepair and the existing bridge was not wide enough for use by the crane on site.

Juneau designed and detailed a new steel grate, center pier extension, and strengthening/widening of the bridge structure.  The new steel grate consists of steel tubes supported off of steel angles that were anchored into the existing wing-walls and the center pier extension.  The bridge was widened / strengthened by adding  a single row of PPC deck beams and a composite concrete overlay including curbs on each side.  The completed structure allows the operator to position the crane on the bridge deck to remove debris from the channel.
