Chouteau Island Recreational Trail and Parking Improvements

Juneau developed plans and specifications for elements of the Chouteau Island Master Plan, which includes nature trails and parking facilities on the Island. Construction of the nature trails involves wetlands delineation and selective clearing to establish the alignment and course of 8-ft. wide nature trails over roughly three acres within the dense 56-acre riparian forest and forested wetlands located west of the agricultural levee and immediately north and south of the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge.

Additional elements in connection with the nature trails include interpretive signage and trail amenities such as benches and viewing areas. Surfacing for the nature trails includes granular materials, wood chip, and compacted earth surfacing as appropriate for the various trail segments. Also as proposed in the Master Plan, the project involved the construction of 100 spaces of what will ultimately be a 200-space parking lot located on top of the old landfill site just east of Schapers Road and north of Chain of Rocks Road. This first phase involved constructing an asphalt parking area roughly 140 ft. x 340 ft. with a 200 ft. long, 30 ft. wide entrance/exit connecting to Chain of Rocks Road. This roadway, which now serves as a bicycle/pedestrian facility will provide a paved connection between the new parking area and the trailhead of the nature trails
