Glen Carbon Heritage Trail

In 1991, Juneau was hired by the Village of Glen Carbon to prepare one of the first grant applications to the Illinois Department of Conservation for a 3.2-mile bike trail to be constructed on an abandoned railroad right-of-way which ran along the outskirts of the Village. The grant application was successful and so began Juneau’s continuing involvement in the design and construction of the Heritage Trail with the Village of Glen Carbon. This role continued on through a second and third phase which extended the trail by 3.5 miles and 1.25 miles respectively.

The trail has been considered a model trail by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Gateway Trailnet and has won several community awards. To date, Juneau has designed more than 90 miles of bike trails as part of the Metro East St. Louis system.
