Metro East Sanitary District Lansdowne and Venice Pump Station Force Mains

Juneau was contracted by the Metro East Sanitary District (MESD) for design and construction engineering services for the replacement of the Lansdowne and Venice pump station force mains. The project included a total of approximately 23,000 linear feet of 24” force main. Juneau’s design engineering tasks included the preparation of construction plans, loan funding documentation, permitting (IEPA and IDOT), coordination with railroads, and the preparation of bidding documents. Construction engineering tasks included shop drawing review, review of pay requests and change orders, record drawing preparation using GPS technology, utility and railroad coordination, and other services.

The project was funded by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency through a 20-year loan. Plan review was provided by IEPA during the permitting application process.

The project was the replacement of the existing 24” force main that serve the Lansdowne and Venice pump stations. The design was to parallel the existing force main with a new 24” PVC force main, utilizing existing easements/licenses for construction. The construction had many obstacles which had to be considered, including utility conflicts and improvements constructed over or adjacent to the easement which made construction difficult. The force main construction had to meet the requirements for separation with water mains as established by IEPA.

The existing 24” ductile iron force main was constructed in the 1980’s, and the hydrogen sulfide in the sewer gases had caused severe deterioration of the main. This deterioration led to failures in the main, causing disruption in service and expensive repairs. The newly constructed force main will provide MESD reliable sanitary force mains serving the District’s two pump stations.

The total construction cost of the force main replacement was approximately $2,360,000.
