Maryville 162 Lakeview Acres Road Roundabout | Maryville, Illinois
Juneau was contracted by The Village of Maryville to provide civil engineering and land surveying services and assistance in obtaining all necessary easements and funding documentation for the construction of the Village’s first roundabout, aiming to relieve congestion caused by a busy intersection near a populated residential area. The project is part of a comprehensive road improvement plan Juneau is managing on behalf of the Village to improve Lakeview Acres Road. The project consists of a new roadway system and roundabout at Lakeview Acres Road and Illinois Highway 162.
The roundabout is a popular roadway design concept in Europe used to eliminate the opportunity for the most deadly crashes at intersections (T-bone and perpendicular collisions). Pedestrians are routed away from the intersection into which automobiles enter to separate crosswalks located at least one full car length outside of the intersection, where they have a refuge between lands of traffic. This enables pedestrians to only have to cope with traffic coming from one direction at a time, which is traveling slowly enough for visual engagement with drivers.
Funding for the $1.2 million roundabout project was obtained through Illinois Department of Transportation, Madison County and the Village of Maryville.
