Gateway Energy and Sun Coke Company, Granite City Coke Ovens
As a subcontractor to AKER Construction, Inc., Juneau provided professional land surveying services that established horizontal and vertical control monuments for use in the construction of a 120 unit SunCoke Energy, coke oven facility in Granite City. Juneau also provided all construction staking related to the construction of the facility, which produces steam for power generation.
Gateway Energy and Coke Company, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary and an affiliate of SunCoke Energy, owns and operates these heat recovery coke ovens that have an annual coke making capability of 650,000 tons and utilize state-of-the-art technology to produce coke in an environmentally responsible way.
The coke facility uses SunCoke Energy’s low-emission technology to process coal into coke, a key ingredient in steelmaking. The technology has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as setting the standard for coal processing ovens. The energy generated in the coke making process will be used in a cogeneration plant that will provide electricity to Granite City Works.
