Project – Design-Build Grain Handling Facility Alberici Constructors / Bunge-SCF Grain, LLC | Industry

As a subconsultant to Alberici Constructors, Juneau Associates was the lead structural engineer for the design-build project to construct a rail- and truck-to-barge grain handling facility for the joint venture group Bunge-SCF Grain. The new river terminal is designed for over a million bushels of permanent storage and can handle high volumes of multiple commodities simultaneously.

Juneau Associates developed plans and specifications for the supporting 8900 square feet reinforced concrete tunnel and other foundations for all of the proposed structures including:

  • Rail dump pit area (19 to 22-ft depth) and building
  • Truck dump pit area (19-ft depth) and building
  • Two 105-ft diameter storage silos
  • Two 36-ft diameter wet bin silos
  • One 24-ft diameter grain dryer
  • 106-ft tall bucket elevator steel tower structure
  • River conveyor steel tower bents on deep foundations
  • Administration building
  • Motor Control Center building

Due to unique project site conditions, special design and detailing was required to accommodate Mississippi River flood levels, differential settlement across the length of the tunnel and silos, and liquefaction potential of the existing soils. Juneau also provided construction phase services including shop drawing reviews, project site visits, and product data reviews
